The Graduate and Professional Student Government Association serves as the sole voice for all graduate and professional students in the Oklahoma State University system. Our mission is to enhance your graduate experience through a unilateral representative body which provides student input on the policies that impact your health, finances, and professional development. GPSGA also provides aid for scholarship, fellowship, and leadership opportunities.

Resolution -- Spring 2011-01

WHEREAS, Several bills that would alter the state’s carry and conceal
laws passed committees on 3 March, 2011; and

WHEREAS, HB2087 would allow faculty and administrators who are legal
residents of the United Stated and licensed to carry a concealed weapon to
carry concealed weapons on university and college campuses, unless
prohibited by the university’s president; and

WHEREAS, HB1652 allows persons with a valid carry concealed license to
store a weapon in their vehicle on technology center property; and

WHEREAS, HB1796 would let voters decide in the next general election (2012)
if Oklahoma would become an open-carry state, allowing any Oklahoman with a
valid handgun license issued by the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation
to carry weapons concealed or unconcealed; and

WHEREAS, HB1796 provides a definition of “unconcealed handgun” to mean
a loaded or unloaded pistol carried upon the person in a belt holster that
is wholly or partially visible, or carried upon the person in a scabbard or
case designed for carrying firearms that is wholly or partially visible;
and

WHEREAS, the graduate students of Oklahoma State University agree that the
safety of all people attending and/or working at Oklahoma State University
is of highest priority; and

WHEREAS, the graduate students of Oklahoma State University agree with the
Oklahoma Regents of Higher Education that allowing the carrying of
concealed weapons on any campus of higher education does not increase the
safety of persons on campus,

Section 1:
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the graduate students of Oklahoma State
University oppose any measure that would allow the carrying of a concealed
weapon on the campus or any university property.

Section 2:
Upon its passage and approval this resolution will be forwarded to Mr.
Burns Hargis (President, OSU), Dr. Marlene Strathe (Sr. Vice President and
Provost, OSU), and other persons as deemed appropriate by the Officers of
GPSGA.
